SUN SAFETY

What to know before your next day outdoors

A cloudy sky or a quick coat of sunscreen can make us feel protected. But UV exposure does not always match what we see or feel.

Before summer arrives, here are five sun safety myths worth clearing up.

1. Myth: You only need protection on hot, sunny days

UV radiation, not heat, causes sun damage. It can reach harmful levels even when the weather feels cool or the sky is overcast. Check the UV Index rather than the temperature.

2. Myth: If you do not burn, your skin is safe

Not getting visibly sunburnt does not mean UV exposure is harmless. People of all skin tones can experience UV damage. Sun protection matters for everyone.

3. Myth: SPF 50+ means you are covered all day

No sunscreen offers complete protection. Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 50 or SPF 50+ sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outside. Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.

4. Myth: Sitting in the shade is enough

Shade is useful, but reflected and scattered UV can still reach you. Combine shade with protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

5. Myth: You only need sun protection at the beach

UV exposure adds up during everyday activities, from a lunchtime walk to outdoor exercise. In Australia, use the five SunSmart steps whenever the UV Index is 3 or above.

Key takeaway

Make checking the UV Index part of your daily routine. When it reaches 3 or above, remember to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.
