REMINDER

Australia and New Zealand have some of the harshest sun exposure in the world. If you spend time outdoors in summer, a skin check is not optional. It is basic self-care.

Why skin checks matter

UV levels across Australia and New Zealand are high year-round and peak hard in summer. Even short periods outside can cause skin damage. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in both countries, but it is also one of the most preventable when caught early.

A skin check helps spot changes before they become serious. It is quick, non-invasive, and could genuinely save your life.

How often should you get a skin check?

There are two parts to staying on top of your skin.

1. Self-checks at home

Once a month is ideal.

Do it in good light with a mirror. Check everywhere. Scalp, ears, back, soles of your feet. Look for:

  • New spots
  • Spots that change in size, colour, or shape
  • Anything itchy, bleeding, or not healing

If something looks different from last month, get it checked.

2. Professional skin checks

Once a year is the general rule.

You may need them more often if you:

  • Have very fair skin
  • Burn easily
  • Have lots of moles
  • Have a family history of skin cancer
  • Spend a lot of time outdoors

If in doubt, go yearly. It is a simple habit with a big payoff.

Quick sun safety reminders for summer

You do not need to hide from the sun, but you do need to respect it.

  • Use sunscreen daily. SPF 30+ minimum. Apply generously and reapply every two hours.
  • Cover up when you can. Hats, sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves help more than you think.
  • Avoid peak UV times. Roughly 11am to 3pm when possible.
  • Do not rely on clouds. UV still gets through.
  • Check UV levels. If the UV index is 3 or higher, sun protection matters.

Key takeaway

A yearly skin check and a monthly self-check are simple habits that fit easily into real life. In our climate, they are not optional extras.
