Make everyday movement count this Steptember

You do not need to find time for one long walk to build your daily step total. Small changes across your commute, workday and time at home can all add up.

Add a little distance to your commute

If it is safe and practical, get off the train, tram or bus one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way. Driving? Park a little farther from the entrance. Working from home? Try a short loop around the block before signing on.

Take the stairs when they work for you

Swap the lift or escalator for the stairs, even if it is only for one or two floors. If stairs are not suitable, choose another accessible option that works for you, such as taking a slightly longer route on level ground.

Turn spare minutes into movement snacks

A movement snack is simply a short burst of activity. Walk while taking a phone call, make a few separate trips instead of carrying everything at once, or use part of your lunch break for a quick walk. A few minutes here and there can move your total forward.

Make social time active

Suggest a walking catch-up with a colleague or friend, take the dog for an extra lap, walk to the park with the family or explore the neighbourhood after dinner. Movement can feel easier when it is part of something else you already enjoy.

Remember that other activities count

House cleaning does still count in 2026. Steptember’s Step Converter includes more than 40 activities that can be logged and converted into steps, including gardening, playing with your pet, dancing, yoga, swimming, cycling, team sports, adaptive sports and boccia. Check the converter in the Steptember app or online when you log your activity.

Pick a goal that works for you

While 10,000 steps is the Steptember goal, participants can adjust their personal daily target to suit their circumstances. Focus on what is realistic for you, celebrate the movement you can do and build from there.

Key takeaway

Choose two or three ideas that fit your routine and repeat them. The most useful step strategy is one you can keep doing throughout September and beyond.
